the PROTECTED HOME FOR CHILDREN, Bodrog, hungary

St Mark’s has a longstanding and warm relationship with The Protected Home for Children in Bodrog, Hungary. The home was started in 1986 by a Hungarian Christian Foundation called Menedek.  Menedek means 'refuge' and the name comes from a verse in Nahum: 'The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble' (Nahum 1.7).

The home comprises a group of Christian families who foster up to five children each and bring them up alongside their own children. There is also a Christian kindergarten school and music school on the site, providing education for the children and for others in the local area. Many of the children are now growing up and the community is praying for new families to come and to continue the work. Recently the organisation of the home has been transferred to the Bodrog Baptist Church which is an integral part of the home.

A group from St Mark’s went to Bodrog as a working party in 1996 to help with painting and other jobs. Another working party went again in 2002 and there have been many informal visits in between.  All of those who have visited have been greatly encouraged and blessed by their time there.  Several of our friends from Bodrog have also visited St Mark’s over the years and in 2004 the Bodrog Children’s Choir came to sing to us.

The commitment and faith of those who live and work in Bodrog has been a constant encouragement to us and they very much appreciate our friendship and prayers.  Many children’s lives have been transformed through their work and ministry.
